What causes loose  and sagging skin?

All of these factors are able to cause you the loose skin that you don’t like.

It’s more than probable that in your case it isn’t just one cause but an interplay between several of these factors.

Now that you have loose skin, there are a few of these reasons that you can’t do much about such as losing weight too fast or your genetics.

However, there are several ways that you can improve the appearance of your skin, and I believe one of the most important is that you make sure that you are benefiting from autophagy as often as you should for your health.

First here are a few other things you could be doing to help your skin:

What can help tighten loose and sagging skin?

There are several things that you could do to help improve the texture and strength of your skin.

You need to boost your collagen levels by taking a collagen supplement every day.

You could also consider eating more collagen containing foods such as Bone broth ( a great keto food too), eggs, cod, and gelatin which comes from collagen.

Make sure you take regular exercise especially high-intensity interval training, jogging or weight training.

The more intensive your work-out the better.

Avoid the sort of work- out that causes your skin to move too much. The extra muscle you gain will also help to fill out the space beneath your loose skin.

Make sure you keep hydrated by drinking enough water each day. At least 6 to 8 glasses, or just over 2 liters each day. Try to drink mostly plain fresh water.

Ensure that you’re getting your right amount of sleep. Aim for between 7 and 8 hours. Make sure that you’re rested and relaxed before bedtime, and taking a shower may help.

Try not to use any electronics for a few hours before bed, and have the bedroom dark.

Getting enough sleep is often overlooked, but it is as important as diet and exercise for your  health.

Eat a nutritionally dense diet, and avoid sugar and sugar containing foods. Too much sugar is known to be damaging to your skin.

Make sure that you’re reaching all your nutritional needs every day.

Autophagy as a way of dealing with loose skin

Autophagy is not just great for your skin, but it is something you want to make sure you’re doing often enough for its health benefits too.

Obviously, the better your general health is, the better looking your skin is going to be so you need to be thinking of a body wide approach to improving your skin.

As you have just read, one of the reasons for loose skin in a loss of collagen. Collagen is produced in your body by fibroblasts.

Fibroblasts are a type of cell that not only makes collagen but is also involved in tissue repair and remodeling. This means that when the production of fibroblasts is low, then the effects are going to show up in your skin.

Autophagy increases production of fibroblasts, and therefor collagen and helps to regenerate skin cells.

This study showed that as the rate of autophagy decreases it leads to aged dermal fibroblasts, which leads to deterioration of dermal integrity and skin fragility.

So there is scientific evidence that autophagy can support skin health and help to tighten and strengthen it too.

If you induce autopagy more than normal to help with your loose skin, you are also going to be benefiting from the multiple health benefits that autopagy is going to be bringing you.

It’s also important to remember that time alone will help in the appearance of your skin. If you have only just lost your extra weight, it may be that things will  improve after a few months.

There is evidence that skin continues to shrink for some years after weight loss, so although you will need to be patient, you will see some improvement naturally.

  1. Hi Judy, I found this post fascinating, I too have the problem of loose skin after losing weight. I did not lose it too fast though about 1lb a week over a year.

As you have explained, age could be a factor too and probably being over weight for a long time. As you say it make take time for the skin to shrink.

I will take on board your advice on collegen though and look into it more.

    Thanks for this gret post,
    Frank

    1. Hi Frank,

Thank you for your comment and kind words!

Yes, definitely look into taking a collegen suppliment. This isn’t a quick fix, but it will help with the loose skin and has quite a few more health benefits too.

I’m pleased that you enjoyed the article.

      All the best,

      Judy
