Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent Fasting With Keto Diet

Intermittent fasting (IF) refers to any period of time up to 3-5 days during which you voluntarily stop eating.

This can be for as short a period as simply skipping breakfast up to 3 -5 days for a complete immune system reset.

The most popular schedule for intermittent fasting is the 16/8 method.

This fast consists of eating all your food in an eight-hour window. For the remaining 16 hours you drink only water, black tea or black coffee.

As with the keto diet, intermittent fasting has also been shown to reduce inflammation and stabilize blood/glucose levels (1) (2)

The benefits of combining the keto diet with intermittent fastingIntermittent Fasting With Keto Diet

The keto diet depends on you reaching the state of ketosis.

This is achieved by eating so few carbs that your body is forced to switch from burning to glucose for fuel to burning fat for fuel.

As a result of this metabolic switch ketones are formed. This gives the keto diet its name, and you an impressive list of benefits.

When the Keto diet is combined with intermittent fasting there are extra benefits.

Firstly, it becomes possible to enter the healthful state of ketosis much more quickly.

Further, by combining IF with keto you will be able to burn more fat than you would by diet alone.

This is because fasting will increase your metabolic rate. It does this by increasing thermogenisis (heat production) which will increase the use of your stored fat. (3)

An eight-week study looked at 34 resistance-trained men. Those who practiced the 16/8 method of intermittent fasting lost nearly 14% more body fat than those following a normal eating pattern (4)

  2. Thank you for explaining this diet. It is interesting as many people think you put on weight if eat fat which is not true as I am learning. Thanks again.

    1. Hi Angee,

Pleased to see that you found the article informative.

You’re quite right, dietary fat is often blamed for weight gain. The truth is that it is very healthy and necessary to include fat in our diet.

It is foods that are too high in carbohydrates that are to blame for people gaining weight.

By reducing the amount of carbs we eat, our diet becomes more healthy. The keto diet is of course a super low carb option, and is amazingly good at causing weight loss without going hungry.

      All the best,

      Judy

  3. I sort of grew naturally into intermittent fasting. We emigrated to Spain where they eat at totally different times then we were used to. Dinner for instance is between 9 and 11 pm. Way too late for me, I would never fall asleep. So we skipped dinner. 🙂
I have more or less the 8/16 system and sometimes it is 9/15. But I am very happy with it.
Good to read your view on it. Thanks.

    1. Hi Hannie,

      Thanks for your comments.

I’m pleased to see that you’ve found a way of intermittent fasting that fits in well with your family´s eating times.

That is the most important thing. I.F. needs to fit with your social life and your own meal times. Once this is worked out, fasting becomes easy.

There is a lot of evidence to suggest that you should not eat within 3-4 hours of going to bed. So it would seem that your decision to skip your evening meal is a super healthy choice too.

      Best wishes,

      Judy

  4. Judy,

I really appreciate for sharing this post. Just what we need right now. My husband tried to do a water fast to lose weight, especially his belly fat. But because he only drank water, he could only do it for 24 hours. His initial plan was for at least 72 hours.
I have been eyeing on the keto diet for a while now. So, I’ll have my husband read this post so he can restart his fasting again but using a better method.
Fingers crossed. I hope it works for him.

    1. Hi Ferra,

      Thanks for your comments.

Your husband probably need to do a few shorter water fasts to begin with. He can always work his way up to a longer fast once he has got used to doing them.

Have him read through the advice and also he’ll need to make sure that his electolytes are ok. Personally I use a little extra salt on the days I’m fasting for this reason.

Hope it all goes well for him,

      Best wishes,

      Judy
